The Golden Gate City

From Harbour Bridge to Golden Gate

When I was a child, I used to watch Full House, an American sitcom on TV, back in the late 80s. The show's opening scene prominently featured the Golden Gate Bridge, and for some inexplicable reason, I fell in love with that iconic structure. It was a mystery to me then, the exact whereabouts of this cherished icon, hidden amidst the enchanting streets of San Francisco, in the heart of California.

Years later in 2024, I finally made it there. Stepping onto the bridge's majestic span and wandering the streets of San Francisco, where the Full House family used to roam, felt like stepping into a dream come true. Surrounded by echoes of laughter, it was as if I had been transported back to that iconic era. And indeed, dreams do come true.

Despite my deep admiration for the city, my stay was brief—just two nights and one and a half days. I've long believed that all cities are essentially the same, each with its central business district, monuments, and buildings. And my time in San Francisco didn't quite challenge that notion as much as I had hoped. However, I also believe that every place has its unique charm, and San Francisco certainly lives up to its distinct ambiance. Trust me when I tell you, the city offers stunning views and a wonderful vibe that you'll just love.

It's a great city to spend a day or two in. With its rich history, from the gold rush era to the Beat Generation and beyond, San Francisco offers a glimpse into the cultural tapestry of America, making it a fascinating destination for any traveller.

Where Did I Stay and How Did I Spend My time in San Francisco?

I flew over from Sydney, Australia, with a stopover in Honolulu. But there was a hiccup – my flight from Honolulu to San Francisco got delayed for 8 hours! By the time I got to my hotel in San Francisco, it was way past midnight. I stayed at Nob Hill Motor Inn. Located in the popular Nob Hill neighbourhood, this hotel places guests within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street, and a number of restaurants and shops.

Exploring San Francisco's Wonders with a Friend

After a restful night's sleep, I woke up feeling invigorated and ready to take on the city. Despite the weather forecast predicting occasional rain, I was determined not to let it dampen my spirits. Luckily, I had a wonderful companion for my adventure – Asif, a long-lost friend from my hometown whom I hadn't seen in over 20 years. I had reached out to him on Facebook before my trip to San Francisco, and he eagerly agreed to show me around the place he calls home.

Asif picked me up from the hotel, and together, we set off on my exploration of the city. Our first stop was the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge, where I marvelled at its grandeur and snapped countless photos of the breathtaking views. From there, we made our way to the Palace of Fine Arts, where I was captivated by its beauty and intricate architecture. After taking in the sights, we decided to recharge with a relaxed coffee break.

With renewed energy, I continued my adventure, venturing to Union Square, where I was greeted by the bustling atmosphere and the imposing Dewey Monument. As evening approached and the rain began to fall, we sought refuge in a cozy restaurant, where we shared stories and laughter with Asif over a delicious dinner.

As the night came to a close, Asif dropped me back at the hotel, and we bid each other farewell with promises to stay in touch. Reflecting on the day's adventures, I felt grateful for the cherished memories made and the rekindling of an old friendship.

Don't Overlook the Overlooked

Hidden among the busy streets of San Francisco is a treasure often missed by both visitors and locals: the Palace of Fine Arts. Despite its beauty and historical importance, many don't appreciate it enough, perhaps because it's often overshadowed by the city's bigger attractions nearby.

Built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, the Palace of Fine Arts was meant to be temporary. But its beauty and cultural importance have lasted long after the expo ended.

The Palace of Fine Arts has beautiful columns, a peaceful lagoon, and stunning architectural features. If you're into history, its captivating charm will mesmerise you.

The Palace of Fine Arts and the Dewey Monument share a historical connection through their association with the Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1915. While the Palace of Fine Arts was constructed as one of the main exhibition halls for the exposition, showcasing art and culture from around the world, the Dewey Monument was erected to commemorate Admiral George Dewey's victory in the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. Both structures were part of the exposition's elaborate landscape, serving as prominent landmarks during the event. Their proximity to each other within the exposition grounds symbolizes San Francisco's celebration of both artistic and military achievements during that period.
